Florida is set to take the field this weekend for their first formal scrimmage of the season. The number one goal for the Gators is to stay healthy, but there are meaningful snaps taking place as Billy Napier works to sort out his depth chart.
It's with that in mind that these four Gators need a solid scrimmage to try and keep their own personal momentum going.
Harrison Bailey
There has been plenty of writing on the wall that in the battle for QB2 that Aidan Warner appears to still have the upper hand. And Warner may very well be doing well in practice, but it's not picking on him to point out that in the 10 quarters of football he has played, where Gator fans have been able to publicly see him, he hasn't been good.
Last year, when he took over for DJ Lagway, he had the third-worst completion rate in the country.
And if one wants to make the argument that those two games were against two of the better defenses in the country, then how do we explain going 10-23 in the spring game against a banged-up Gator secondary?
This is where Bailey can try and claw back some ground with a solid showing in the scrimmages because the reality is that it is not a guarantee that Lagway is going to make it through 2025 unscathed.
KD Daniels
The unfortunate part is that KD Daniels now has a very real opportunity to be in the main rotation of the running back room because Treyaun Webb is out with a hamstring issue.
But Daniels is a very capable back who took a backseat last year to Jadan Baugh.
The thing for Daniels, though, is that he does have a crowd of running backs behind him ready to step up if he were to falter during these scrimmages.
George Gumbs and/or Kamran James
When a bunch of stories come out during camp about one particular player, that is usually by design. Coaches have a way of hyping up players, and it is their way of letting everyone know who is standing out.
So, given that Jayden Woods seems to be the chosen one this camp, it creates an interesting discussion at EDGE.
For argument's sake, there aren't many meaningful snaps to hand out at EDGE once you get past the main four guys you are going to use in your rotation. The 5th and 6th guy on the depth chart might be able to squeeze in 5-10 snaps, but that's about it.
So if we are to assume that Woods is breaking into the top four at EDGE, and Tyreak Sapp is a lock, that leaves LJ McCray, George Gumbs, and Kamran James as your main candidates.
McCray has looked explosive in the few public clips we have been able to see, and given his former five-star status, we are also going to assume he is at least going to get a shot if he is at all close.
And while George Gumbs seemed like a lock coming into the year, his name hasn't really popped up much during camp. Likewise, Kamran James got plenty of snaps last year and is in a "prove it" year.
It is worth keeping an eye on who Napier chooses to highlight in his press conferences.
