LSU’s latest running back commitment creates a notable subplot for a Florida target

As things twist and turn for Florida’s class of 2027, there are some loose ends that will need to be addressed and a couple of final targets that Florida will want answers on. Their two biggest targets coming out of this past weekend are still Jalen Brewster and Easton Royal, but there are a couple of others floating around.

One of those is Trey Martin, a four-star running back out of Louisiana. And one has to wonder if a recent commitment to LSU might actually signal good news for Florida in their pursuit of Martin.

Florida is still trying to get Trey Martin to commit

LSU hasn’t had many commitments to this point for the class of 2027, but they did pick up running back David Segarra on Tuesday, a four-star prospect out of South Carolina. Segarra is the second running back to commit to LSU this cycle.

That creates an interesting subplot as Florida tries to push Martin towards a commitment, as the Gators only have one running back currently committed, Andrew Beard.

We profiled Martin earlier in the month and really liked what we saw. When we reviewed his film, we said:

“The thing about Martin on film is that he doesn’t run like a 201-pound RB. His ability to change speeds and make quick cuts is the type of stuff one would expect from someone 30 pounds lighter. So while he doesn’t necessarily have game-breaking speed, which is backed up by him running a 11.41 in the 100-meter dash  this past season, he has a style that just keeps opposing linebackers and safeties all balanced. He’ll plant his foot and act like he is coming straight at you, only to subtly wind up cutting to the side.”

Martin is a 247 Composite top 200 player. He recently announced his top three, with Florida, LSU, and Ole Miss being the three teams still standing.

The big loser as it stands right now is actually South Carolina and Shane Beamer, who just watched a top-rated prospect from just down the road opt to leave the state.

Martin is slated to return to Gainesville this weekend for the Gators' cookout event, and we would have to imagine Sumrall is going to be in his ear. We have no actual intel on this, but it also feels like we should not be shocked if Martin were to commit this weekend.

As it stands right now, Florida has 22 commits for the class of 2027 and is ranked No. 6 in the 247 rankings.
