Jon Sumrall was not happy with the performance of the second unit in the Florida Gators' 52-3 win over Campbell in Week 2.
It just wasn't good. The second-team offense didn't score. Tramell Jones threw a pick and couldn't push the ball down the field. Duke Clark, who looked like he was going to be the primary second running back option behind Jadan Baugh, had just 18 yards on five carries.
This was against Campbell too. The whole point of scheduling the Fighting Camels is to run up some numbers on them. That $525,000 check to Campbell from Florida is supposed to be payment for putting up about 75 points. But that didn't happen and Sumrall was angry in the postgame press conference.

After a day of cooling down and watch some film....Sumrall was still not pleased.
"I was right on a lot of it. I wanted to see some guys, some depth to our roster play better because I want them to play good. You know, like I'm for every player on our team becoming the best they can be, regardless of age, who recruited them, how long they've been here. I want them all to grow and develop to become their best," he said.

The "preseason" is over, and the next nine games are in the conference. Check out that conference schedule and circle the gimmes for Florida. There are NONE. Kentucky on the road? The Gators haven't won in Lexington since 2019 and have been held to a total of 34 points in their last three trips to Kentucky. Vanderbilt might not be good, but the Commodores probably won't be a walkover either.
I think Sumrall feels pretty good about the starters so far. Aaron Philo looks like he can ball. Jadan Baugh is Jadan Baugh. The top four wide receivers and the starting offensive line are fine. Defensively, the pass rush could be better, but the first team will keep Florida in games.
But after that, there's nothing for Sumrall to feel really good about.
"I think, when we rolled the depth of our roster into the game [we] did not play clean football. I'm not trying to, like, make an excuse for who we are right now, but we're really young.I want to see some of these young players step up and grow and be ready to go play. And Saturday night, when some of those guys got their opportunities, it just wasn't up to the standard we have," he added.
For what it's worth, I don't think Auburn is going to be great this year, but they are miles better than Campbell. Sumrall is well aware of what lies ahead and Week 3 is officially go time for the Gators. Some guys that may or may not be ready will have their number, and they had better be able to swim because drowning isn't an option.
