Florida jumped out to a 45-3 halftime lead against Campbell and looked like they were going to smash the 49.5-point spread that Vegas has set forth. The Gators then managed just seven points in the second half and ended up winning by 49 points on the dot.
Somehow Vegas always knows.
In his press conference, Jon Sumrall touched on relative slopiness in the second half and touched upon his displeasure with how some guys performed.
Jon Sumrall not pleased with Florida’s 2nd half against Campbell
Sumrall didn’t call anyone out by name, but he sent a warning shot to some of the guys who played in the 2nd half and made it seem like they won’t be seeing the field any time soon:
“A lot I was not pleased with, to be quite honest with you. Some guys proved, maybe in the second half, you get an opportunity to prove people right or wrong, some guys proved us right why they're not playing right now.
We were way too sloppy. I think in the second half we had more penalties in the second half than we have all year prior to the second half. That was really frustrating. If we play like we did in the second half, we're about to have a real rude awakening. We have got a lot of improvement to do.
While I'm really happy to be 1-0 this week, I'm not real pleased with just maybe where we are from a maturity standpoint, executing at a really high level all the time. What we're about to walk into in conference play, we will get absolutely embarrassed if we don't improve a ton.”
For what it is worth, the four lowest PFF-rated players from last night were all starters (Ben Hanks III, Cormani McClain, Aaron Chiles, and Kanye Clark). On offense, the bottom-rated players were mostly from the 2nd and 3rd units. But even on offense, the 2nd half was bogged down by penalties, muffed punts, and interceptions.
This follows up on his comments from last week, and frankly from all offseason, where he has not been shy about voicing his displeasure even when things are seemingly going well. The real test is going to be how much his message resonates within Florida’s locker room.
