In that breath, there is a very rational narrative to craft as to why Florida wasn’t as ruthless against Campbell as it was against FAU. There are also fair questions about why Florida didn’t manage more against an overmatched opponent than last week.
All we know is that Florida, on paper, did what it had to do against an overmatched opponent to set up a massive showdown next week.
Florida pummels Campbell to move to 2-0
After what Florida did against FAU last week, it is understandable why Florida fans could feel frustrated that the Gators didn’t do more against Campbell. As we pointed out earlier this week, scoring 70 points would have been fun, but it also has a massive inconsistency in proving that it proves anything of substance.
What we learned about Florida last night is that when it wants to, it can impose its will against inferior opponents. If we are to pay attention to the details, there are areas that still need to be answered prior to next week’s game against Auburn. If you are an Auburn fan or a random SEC fan checking this out from the outside, there wasn’t much from last night that you can create a narrative from.
With that said, the juxtaposition of last night is that this was the same team that set up Vernell Brown III for a hat trick of TDs, while Campbell also moved the ball enough that even your residential father-in-law found a way to complain about Florida’s defense, even though it gave up only three points.
The most important thing is that nobody got hurt, and the big time play makers on offense showcased once again why people are so high on this offense as a whole. The defense didn’t have a great opening drive as a whole, but in the end they still only gave up 210 yards.
This time next week, we won’t be squinting at the details, as Florida is now done with their tune-up games. The Gators take on Auburn next week where in the end all that will matter is that Florida picks up a win.
For now, Florida is 2-0.
