Coming into the NCAA Tournament, the road to Oklahoma City for the Gators seemed more difficult than Florida would have liked. The Gators were grouped with upset-minded Texas State, and then were going to get funneled into a Super Regional with Texas Tech.
But after a chaotic Saturday in the NCAA Tournament, Florida’s road to the WCWS might not be as scary as the bracket once seemed.
Florida run rules Georgia Tech to advance to Regional finals
Florida smashed Georgia Tech 8-0 in five innings to advance to the Regional finals on Sunday. Kenleigh Callahan’s three-run home run in the 3rd started the run parade, and Ava Brown drew a bases-loaded walk in the 5th inning to make it 8-0. Keagan Rothrock went 5.0 innings with just four hits and a walk on 86 pitches.
Florida will face Georgia Tech again on Sunday and just needs to beat the Yellow Jackets once to advance ti Super Regionals. If Georgia Tech wins the first game, there will be a winner-take-all game right after.
It is notable that Florida is facing Georgia Tech, as it was Texas State that was expected to be the team the Gators would face. But despite being the higher-ranked team, Texas State lost twice to Georgia Tech and was eliminated.
The other side of Florida’s pathway to Oklahoma City is going to have the winner of the Lubbox Regional. What makes that pathway scary for Florida is that it could potentially bring Texas Tech and NiJaree Canady to town. But in their game yesterday, Texas Tech looked like a shell of the team that has the second-best odds from Vegas to win the WCWS.
Canady looked mortal, and Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead that ballooned to an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th. Ole Miss even record two outs and had two strikes on Texas Tech with this 8-0 lead.
Texas Tech won the game.
This century, teams were 0-640 when trailing by 8+ runs in an NCAA softball tourney game.

It's now 1-640. Texas Tech was down 8 runs WITH ONLY ONE OUT LEFT and somehow became the first 🤯 pic.twitter.com/AvDAiTtjVD
It was a comeback for the ages for the Red Raiders, but it doesn’t exactly strike fear into the heart of Florida batters should the Red Raiders emerge today.
Florida’s game against Georgia Tech starts at 12 PM today, while Texas Tech will take on Ole Miss at 4 PM.
