There was once upon a time when Florida fans wouldn’t even think about trying to worry about soon-to-be high school juniors for a recruiting class, but the nature of NIL combined with early signing day has pushed everyone’s timeline up. So even though the Gators haven’t signed a single player for their class of 2027, they are already full steam ahead with their class of 2028.
And based on a new prediction from Gators Online, Jon Sumrall might be locking in on his QB for the class of 2028.
Florida predicted to land QB Hudson West
Steve Wiltfong of Rivals has logged a prediction that QB Hudson West is going to choose the Gators. The class of 2028 QB out of Sarasota is a three-star with both Rivals and ESPN, while 247 has yet to rank him.
One might paint a narrative that Sumrall is settling and is somewhat panicking to lock up a low-ranked QB this early in the process, but we also encourage people to watch his film before making such judgments.
We profiled West last month when he took part in Florida’s Friday Night Lights event, and we said at the time that:
“On film, he uses his 6’5” frame well, and he stays tall in the pocket. He has a quick release, but it’s one that seldom feels panicked or rushed. He also isn’t someone who locks in and automatically goes with his first read, which is a great sign for a class of 2028 prospect.
He could benefit from stepping into throws a bit more, and his completion percentage of 55% will need to improve, but he also averaged 257 yards per game in 2025 and had 26 TDs against just five INTs, so he has a great base to work with. Keep in mind, too, West put up those stats on a 4-7 team, so it’s also not like he is surrounded by an all-star roster.”
For what it is worth, West is not slated to face Florida’s 2027 QB commit Davin Davidson this year even though Davidson plays for Sarasota’s Cardinal Mooney. And it’s also worth noting that when Sumrall dialed in and went after Davidson, he too wasn’t highly ranked, and now Davidson is ranked in the top 150 in the country.
It also builds a bit of a narrative for the type of QB Sumrall might prefer, as both Davidson and West are on the taller side of things.
As we have said with any 2028 prospect we have profiled, there is still a long way from now to getting these guys on campus, as all of them still have two years of high school to go. But West is worth keeping an eye on, and we’ll see if this prediction holds true a year and a half from now.
