Florida continues to be on a heater in recruiting and has picked up two new commits on Friday. The Gators landed four-star EDGE Cahron Wheeler out of Maryland and then picked up three-star athlete/safety Kamarion Johnson out of Georgia.
Johnson, in particular, is one of those classic high upside guys, and his film gives clues as to what vision Jon Sumrall might have for him once he arrives in Gainesville as part of the class of 2027.
Kamarion Johnson commits to Florida
We first profiled Johnson a couple of months ago when he was gaining steam on Florida’s radar. At the time, we said:
“He seems to play everything as Johnson gets used as a wide receiver, running back, safety, corner, and punt/kick returner. And no matter where he is on the field, he always finds a way to make an impact. He can make difficult catches in traffic, whether it’s on offense or defense, and he just has a way to always pull away and let no one catch him.
He’s probably accurately rated as a higher three-star, but his all-around versatility makes him an intriguing prospect.”
Watching his film back, which is over eight minutes long, we would probably stand by his current three-star ranking as fair, but now that he is a Gator, there are a couple of clips that do stand out for how he could fit within Florida’s scheme.
Johnson isn’t afraid to come downhill to make a tackle, which is something that Florida safeties under the previous regime seemed scared to do. But we also see a couple of glimpses where he is a bit of a ballhawk, and his work as a wide receiver pays off to help make a couple of tough interceptions. Knowing that Florida defensive coordinator Brad White used a ton of cover three while he was at Kentucky, Johnson’s knack for the ball could help the Gators steal a turnover or two.
If nothing else, Johnson will probably have a case as a true freshman to be in the mix as Florida’s punt returner in 2027.
As it stands, Johnson is Florida’s lowest-rated commit out of 21. But given the Gators have plenty of blue-chip prospects already in the class of 2027, it doesn’t hurt to take an all-around athlete like Johnson, who has three or four different ways he could get on the field sooner rather than later.
