Florida QB commit Davin Davidson runs into buzzsaw in preseason opener

One of the key cogs of Florida’s class of 2027 is QB Davin Davidson. We have profiled Davidson throughout as a hidden gem that Jon Sumrall targeted right away when he got the job. As recently as January, 247 had Davidson as a three-star, while the other main sites didn’t have him ranked at all.

Davidson is now a composite top-125 player and recently took part in the Elite 11 Finals.

Davidson started his senior campaign with Cardinal Mooney in Sarasota on Friday night, and let’s say that he has had better nights as a football player.

In a preseason opener against perennial power St. Thomas Aquinas, the defending 2A state champs were shut down by the Raiders, and St. Thomas Aquinas won 49-0.

Davidson’s final stat line was 3-of-21 for 22 yards and two interceptions.

Based on other videos floating around from the game, Davidson did make a couple of throws he deserved a better fate on, but the general report is that he just never seemed comfortable.

One bad night doesn’t erase Davidson’s rapid rise

Is this game a reason for Florida fans to panic and think that Sumrall made a mistake? We wouldn’t go that far just yet. A ton of factors go into a preseason game, and while high school generally treats these games more seriously than the NFL, most high school teams still have a lot to work out.

Plus, this game feels like an anomaly compared to what we have seen from him in the past. When we first profiled Davidson back in January, we said:

“On film, Davidson stands tall and doesn’t seem to panic much in the pocket. He frequently is able to fire throws into tight windows, and he is very comfortable when having to throw on the run, despite his lanky frame that could make throws like that a challenge.

He has some scramble ability, but it is not a key component of his game.”

We would chalk a game like this up more to St. Thomas Aquinas being that stacked than to anything Davidson should have controlled. If he starts to string games like this together, then we can start to look for the panic button.
