Florida fans knew the roster was good enough and Napier’s GM just admitted it

Florida never had worse than the 15th best roster

Yes, the Billy Napier Era is a dead horse that we are all ready to move on from, and yes, the focus for the 2026 season is going to be squarely on Jon Sumrall’s ability to navigate his own first voyage as an SEC head coach.

But every time Napier and his staff reflect on their time in Gainesville, it's a reminder of the stench they left behind, worse than the seaweed currently invading Key West. And in this week’s Napier reflection piece, it’s Florida’s old GM who mused aloud the very thing that Gator fans had been saying all four years of the Billy Napier Era.

Florida’s old guard admits they had the talent to compete in 2025

CBS Sports did another deep dive reflection with Napier on why he failed at Florida. For the most part, Napier didn’t say anything new compared to what he had reflected on in previous reflection pieces.

But in this piece, we also heard from Jacob LaFrance, who was on Napier’s staff all four years in Gainesville and was listed as Florida’s General Manager in 2024 and 2025. In the piece, LaFrance stated:

“The roster we had in Year 4, which is the most frustrating part, I would have stacked it against anyone in the country”

Right, we knew. That was the problem.

But also, the next line from the author of the piece states, “That talent upswing just came too late.”

Well, let’s have a chat.

According to the 247 Talent Composite, this is what Florida’s roster was ranked during the four years of the Napier Era:

  • 2025 - 12th
  • 2024 - 12th
  • 2023 - 15th
  • 2022 - 14th

So yes, the roster was getting better, but it’s not like Florida’s roster was so bare bones that 2025 was Napier’s only shot at putting together a successful campaign. For those keeping score at home, 16 of Napier’s 23 losses came against teams against which Florida had a better talent composite than.

Florida didn’t have the roster to compete for a national title, but the narrative that everything was set up for 2025 and then just fell apart ignores why Napier was on the hot seat in the first place. He had the talent where 8-4 should have been the floor, not the ceiling.

But this is the same staff who ignored those flashing red lights and wanted praise the instant anything went correctly. So yes, we are going to keep beating this dead horse because the dead horse gaslit Florida fans for four years to never dare to question the master plan.

The least we can do is warn JMU fans what they are in store for.
