Florida becomes newest focus of Lane Kiffin speculation after hush-hush meeting

When reports emerged that Lane Kiffin representatives had met with members of the Florida athletic department, the rumor mill was busier than ever.

Earlier this week, it looked like Lane Kiffin was heading to Baton Rouge to take over the LSU Tigers as his ex-wife visited the campus. Then, people calmed down a little and returned to assuming that he would stay with the Ole Miss Rebels.

Now, reports have emerged that Kiffin's representatives met with people from the Florida athletic department, turning the rumor mill in the Gators' direction.

This comes just days (if not mere hours) after everyone had turned off their hopes for the Florida Gators to land Kiffin as the replacement for former head coach Billy Napier.

Are the Gators still in the race for Lane Kiffin?

Kiffin has done absolutely nothing to calm the fears of Ole Miss fans, as he has repeatedly refused to denounce rumors that he is shopping for other jobs.

Florida is just one of more than a dozen schools looking for a new head coach, but Kiffin has been their crown jewel throughout their month-long search. Many feared that, as programs like LSU and Penn State also look for a new head coach, the Gators had missed their opportunity to land Kiffin as their next guy holding the reins.

The latest reports have Gator fans eager to join the Kiffin conversation once again.

While Kiffin (obviously) hasn't confirmed nor denied the report, his representatives have yet to do so as well. So, for all we know, Kiffin is heading to Gainesville and the Gators have found their newest head coach.

However, as the past month has shown everyone, Florida fans cannot let themselves get their hopes up, and for now, they need to keep hoping interim head coach Billy Gonzales can figure out how to lead the Gators to a win.

Making everything a little more intermixed, Gonzales and the Gators' most recent loss was to none other than Kiffin and the then-No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels. Up next, Florida has to host the No. 20 Tennessee Volunteers before closing out the abysmal season against the Florida State Seminoles.

On Saturday, Nov. 22, Florida and Tennessee are scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, and the SEC matchup will be broadcast on ABC.
