Eric Singleton's injury is the only thing that could damper Florida's dominant Week 1 win

The Florida Gators offense was explosive against Florida Atlantic, racking up 66 points and the party got started with Vernell Brown III scampering 49 yards to the house on a WR screen. Talk about a great start to the Jon Sumrall era.

Brown's touchdown sent the Swamp into a frenzy and Eric Singleton's block on the perimeter helped set up the big play. However, it might've come at a big price for the high-profile transfer wide receiver, as he was rolled up on the play and left the game with a leg injury.

That looks hideous, and we can only hope it's not too serious. Singleton was a big signing out of the portal after he spent the past season at Auburn. He came to Florida to reunite with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who he spent two seasons with at Georgia Tech before moving on to Auburn after the 2024 season.

Eric Singleton's injury is one to monitor beyond Week 1 for Jon Sumrall

Singleton has been one of the most productive receivers in the country over his first three years, averaging 54 catches a season and having over 2,000 yards for his career. With Dallas Wilson and Brown in the fold already, Singleton is expected to be that additional weapon that forces defenses to pick their poison in the pass game.

"I think all the guys in that receiver room... [have] really pushed him to be the best that he can be," Aaron Philo said of Singleton in August. "He's not afraid of competition. He comes in every day and works his butt off. I'm really excited for him and what he's going to be able to do this season."

With the Gators up comfortably throughout the game, there's the possibility Singleton wasn't rushed back in, as the passing game was fantastic while he was out. Brown led all receivers with 117 yards and a touchdown on six catches. TJ Abrams had a 63-yard catch and Bailey Stockton hauled in a touchdown. Both Abrams and Stockton should expect to see more time if Singleton's injury keeps him out of the lineup for any extended period of time.

The concerns about Philo as the starting quarterback, despite his lack of experience, have been unfounded so far. His command of Faulkner's offense has been clear from the first snap, and he's been accurate and decisive as a passer and a runner, accounting for nearly 300 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. And we never have to worry about Jadan Baugh bringing it every week.

There are plenty of things for Gator fans to be happy about after the opening week as all of Sumrall's promises of effort and physicality have come true. But if Singleton is going to have to miss a lot of time, it's likely going to keep the Florida offense from being as good as it could be and that will be important when things start to get tougher in a couple of weeks.
