Throughout Florida’s QB battle, it was widely believed that Aaron Philo had the upper hand over Tramell Jones. Outside of Florida’s spring game, though, fans didn’t get to see the battle behind the scenes and had to rely on what Jon Sumrall said.
It became clear last week who Sumrall was leaning towards, and he doubled down on what the tiebreaker wound up being between the QBs heading into the 2026 season.
Florida names Aaron Philo its starting QB
Sumrall made it clear last week that Philo had a real advantage over Jones because of his knowledge of the offense. Fair or unfair, Philo has been groomed in this offense for years, while Jones learned it on the fly. Sumrall pointed out last week how Jones still needed to improve with shifts, motions, and other presnap elements to catch up to Philo.
When asked today what Philo did better to win the job, Sumrall continued down that train of thought:
“I would say opperate at the line scrimmage at just a touch higher level and be more efficient. You know, there's no surprise to that in spring because he had been in the system and Tramiel had not. Tramiel has improved a ton, but I still think we're able to operate the full offense at a little bit higher level right now with Aaron and with the whole package. And so that's probably the biggest separator.”
What’s notable is that he said almost everything else was equal, including arm strength, and added, “They're kind of similar players.”
Aaron Philo had a leg up from day one
We've said throughout this process that, even though we have been more impressed with Jones when he's been on display, there is a world where Philo makes sense. We said back in December, before Philo had even transferred to Florida, that:
“There is a pathway Philo might be the ideal fit for the offense that Buster Faulkner wants to run, and there is value in having someone who immediately understands the playbook.”
Buster Faulkner’s offense is noted for, among other things, its presnap movement. And while CFB 27 isn’t automatically a great litmus test, anyone who has used Florida’s playbook this year can attest that the Gators have a ton of shifts and motions that have to be accounted for.
If Jones wasn’t up to speed on those things and Florida’s offense struggled because of it, then Philo makes sense, and we are not ready to sleep on him just yet.
