It's official! Jalen Brewster is in Gainesville this weekend, but how much of a chance do the Florida Gators have with the top-ranked defensive lineman in the country?
That question will go a long way toward being answered and there are a lot of teams that are in the picture hoping to flip Brewster from his commitment to Texas Tech. Florida doesn't have some of the natural connections that other competitors have, but Jon Sumrall has proven that he isn't afraid to jump into the toughest recruiting battles.Â

"If you were to ask sources which team might be best positioned to make a run [for Brewster], the answer would probably be Florida, unanimously," On3/Rivals national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman said on 'The Inside Scoop' web program. "Jon Sumrall, Gerald Chatman and this Florida staff have made this close. He's been to the Swamp twice this spring, and he's getting ready for his third visit back to Gainesville before he heads to Lubbock next weekend. Florida is within striking distance, and you've got to keep an eye on the Gators. The most common suggestion [from Texas Tech sources] is that Florida is the best team positioned to make a run in this recruitment."
Jon Sumrall has to make the most of his shot with 5-star DL Jalen Brewster
As Spiegelman points out, Brewster will wrap up his official visit schedule back at Texas Tech, and we'll see how that program is balancing some very serious issues with trying to present its top commitment with compelling reasons to stay with the Red Raiders.
There are other schools in the picture and each of them have somewhat of a personal attachment to Brewster. He has already taken official visits to Indiana, SMU, LSU and Texas. It's not the typical type of visit pattern we see from a major blue-chip recruit. There's no Notre Dame, Ohio State, Alabama or Georgia on the list. Miami was in the picture for a while, but both sides appeared to have moved on.Â
"The national champions hosted him [first]. His father played at Ball State, and he has ties to the state of Indiana. He visited LSU, which has a rich history of getting the No. 1 defensive lineman in America. He visited SMU. He's obviously a Dallas-born and raised young man," Spiegelman said. "He lives in Dallas and would love to represent the city. SMU has the NIL funds to make this interesting. But it's Florida, who is not only competitive with NIL, but they are competitive in relationships."
The relationships have been the big key for Sumrall. Recruits really like him, and he has the sort of personality and energy that connects with players. Florida already has a top-five class and the addition of Brewster would give the Gators two prospects inside the top-five nationally. That would be an amazing first class and a big sign that the future is bright for Florida.
