It’s summertime, and everyone knows what that means in the world of recruiting: it’s time for a rankings update. Has there been any real football played since the last update? No, of course not. But between a reevaluation of film and camps, along with some other prospects getting second looks as more and more schools pursue them, this is the season.
247 just updated their rankings for the class of 2027, and we are going to look at the top 11 rated commits the Gators have and whether or not their new ranking is fair or unfair.
Florida players get a rankings update from 247
Maxwell Hiller: No. 4 → No. 2
While we are at it, let’s make him No. 1. But it is positive to see that 247 didn’t use Hiller’s commitment to Florida as some magical excuse to drop him. As we have stated throughout, Hiller is the real deal, and it would be stunning not to see him wind up as a first-round pick in the NFL.
Kennedee Jackson: No. 122 → No. 73
When he was on the verge of committing, we said of his film that “Jackson can flatten guys to the ground without much effort, and his natural frame is so imposing that he really doesn’t need to move much to be in the way of someone.” This feels warranted, though hopefully it’s also not a byproduct of Georgia being hot on his heels.
Elias Pearl: No. 114 → No. 116
Staying put is probably fair enough for Pearl, but he has the type of film where one wouldn’t blink if he was inside the top 100.
Cahron Wheeler: No. 128 → No. 137
As he was getting ready to commit, we said that it felt like the only reason he wasn’t higher was that he was from Maryland, we are just going to guess he hasn’t hit the camp circuit. Getting dropped based on what we saw on film is wild as Wheeler should be a top 100 player.
Peyton Miller: No. 145 → No. 152
At least 247 has him at No. 152, unlike Rivals, which has him down at No. 259. The mid-four-star range is fair enough for Miller.
Elijah Hutcheson: No. 110 → No. 160
What are we actually doing here? This feels like a case of someone from Virginia just not getting love for the sole fact that they are from Virginia. When we reviewed his film, we said, “Hutcheson has the type of physicality on film that has opposing coaches throw their hands up in the air, begging for a flag because it’s basically the only hope they have. His power looks like it comes naturally, and he can hold his ground with seemingly little effort.”
Tramond Collins: No. 174 → No. 175
Collins is always going to be tricky to evaluate, given the general level of competition he faces. Don’t get it twisted, he is a one-man scoring machine at times, it just lacks that instant “pop” against top-level competition that makes his lack of movement anything to be upset about.
Davin Davidson: No. 222 → No. 180
Florida’s QB for this class is an interesting one because people rave about his film, and it should be noted that he was essentially unrated back in December. He also went to the Elite 11 Finals and did fine, but wasn’t the talk of the camp. So while we could probably argue he should be higher, knowing how these things shake out, this is expected.
Amare Nugent: No. 119 → No. 195
This is obviously the most notable drop of anyone, and it highlights the folly of camp season. On film, Nugent is a bruising cornerback who isn’t afraid to get physical. During camp season, that element of his game is going to get neutered. Throw in that his 100-meter dash time from this past track and field season hovered around 11.4 to 11.2 seconds, and we know why the drop happened; we are just saying we don’t think it should have happened.
Andrew Beard: No. 165 → No. 201
This might be our hottest take in this list: this drop isn’t actually that unfair. It’s in line with what Rivals and ESPN have, and if we are being honest, it is in line with where we probably would have ranked him based solely on his film.
Ja'Bios Smith: No. 177 → No. 232
Like Nugent, this feels like a byproduct of camp season not rewarding a bruising and physical player. Smith doubles as an RB and is next to impossible to drag down, and as LB, he stonewalls guys. This is way too crazy a drop.
