The Florida Gators team of two weeks ago is not the team of today. After a 38-19 loss to a desperate South Carolina team at the Swamp, it's officially time to admit that Jon Sumrall has some glaring problems on this roster that need to be fixed. Some of those fixes will come with guys like Vernell Brown III and Eric Singleton Jr. getting healthy, others will need to be done through recruiting and roster construction.
Any hopes at being a borderline CFP team should be tempered. The Gators aren't a playoff team in 2026, but they should be a bowl team, and they could play a spoiler role down the stretch. But after a September to remember, it's been an October to forget, and Florida still has games against Texas and Georgia to deal with.
Here are the winners and losers from Florida's 38-19 loss to South Carolina in Week 6:
Loser: Florida isn't good enough to lose the turnover battle
There are a number of problems we can document from this loss, but going minus-3 in the turnover battle is going to result in a loss 99 times out of 100. Both Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones threw picks and Philo also lost a fumble. This is a team that isn't good enough to have that many negative plays and the results were proof of that.
Right to the defense... 🤦♂️

Loser: Jadan Baugh just can't get any space
Baugh seemed like a lock for the Doak Walker Award and was looking at a potential Heisman campaign. Both things need to be shelved for now as the All-SEC running back simply needs to find space to operate.
There were some things to build on — he had a 26-yard run in the second half and added a touchdown in garbage time — but he has to be better and the guys blocking for him have to do a better job because the Gators have no hope in these upcoming games without better production from the running game.
Loser: The fans got a little restless at the worst time
Unless you were living in the clouds, you had to expect there were going to be some growing pains. That doesn't mean you have to like everything, but booing going into the half wasn't the best way to deal with a fragile team. And then the rumblings about Philo could have been saved too. He's far from perfect, but he was trying to do everything he could to keep Florida in that game. I get the fan angst and the desire to win, but this team needs support because they are hanging on by a thread.
Loser: The injuries have put the offense in deep freeze
Vernell Brown III is basically irreplaceable in this offense and Eric Singleton tried to go, but he was compromised all day. They tried to use Duke Clark a little more on those perimeter plays and he got banged up. The defenses are already loading up the box to stop Baugh and without the full allotment of receivers, this offense can be exposed. It was a good showing for Bailey Stockton (8 catches, 127 yards, TD), but it wasn't enough.

Winner: The special teams need to build on the blocked punt
With the offense not producing at the level it was last month, Florida needs the defense and special teams to make plays and create short fields and scoring opportunities. Even though the blocked punt came too late to make a difference on the scoreboard, it could lead to the Gators being more aggressive in blocking kicks down the stretch.
