Jon Sumrall takes the blame for Florida's loss after his original message falls on deaf ears

The humbling of the Florida Gators continued in Week 6.

After Jon Sumrall said the Florida Gators' loss to Missouri in Week 5 was a humbling experience, he challenged the roster to go out be better against the struggling South Carolina Gamecocks. Outside of an early touchdown pass from Aaron Philo to Bailey Stockton, the Gators failed to show the response to adversity that Jon Sumrall was hoping to see in a 38-19 loss at The Swamp.

"I'm frustrated with every part of what we did today, and it starts with me. I've got to do a better job of getting this team to play to its best," Sumrall said after the game.

Florida is going to have to swim in some tough waters or this season is lost

After Sumrall called out his team repeatedly after the Missouri game, he was promised a better effort. Jadan Baugh texted everyone involved with Gators football to tell them that he promised not to let this happen again.

Well, Tim Tebow he ain't, because it happened a week later. Baugh had a 26-yard run in the second half, but not much else, as he finished with 59 yards on 15 carries. He had a late touchdown that we hope can help him regain some of the form he showed in September.

It is not to say that this is Baugh's fault. The offensive line, which over-performed in the first few weeks, quickly reverted to the mean, and is now on the wrong side of that average. South Carolina brought Dylan Stewart back after a week-long suspension, and he recorded a sack as part of a pass rush that got to Philo more and more as the game went on.

This was not the performance that Florida needed a week before a road game against Texas, and a trip to Atlanta to take on Georgia at the end of October. Two weeks ago, the idea of the Gators and Longhorns playing as two undefeated teams ranked in the top five was not too farfetched. Now I am wondering if the Gators can avoid a four-game losing skid heading into November.

Sumrall knew that he had work to do. For months heading into the season, he talked about all the areas where Florida was lacking. Some fans dismissed it as coach speak, but by now we should know that Sumrall does not sugarcoat anything. He is a first-year SEC head coach, but he was an assistant in this league before. He knows how quickly things can get away from a team in this league.

Now, the work really begins. Sumrall has to rally this team and get the Gators back on track. The effort is not lacking, but the explosive plays on offense are not there, and opposing teams have identified the issues in the Gators secondary that can be exploited.
