As the season fast approaches for Florida football, we are continuing our series of the freshmen on campus and what the odds are they appear this season with the Gators. If you follow recruiting, these will be household names. But if not, these can be a good refresher to catch you up to speed.

We have previously profiled:

Today we look at one of the more intriguing players on the roster, Aaron Gates.

Florida Football: No flip needed

Billed as a four-star athlete out of Trinity Christian in Georgia (not the same Trinity Christian as fellow freshman Treyaun Webb), Gates committed to the Florida Gators back in August of 2021, when Dan Mullen was still the coach.

Gates kept his commitment to the Gators even though Michigan made a late push to flip him. He didn’t formally sign his letter of intent until May.

He was noted in high school for his ideal size to play corner (6’1″ and 197 pounds) while having a keen sense of how to locate the ball in the air. Gates was also noted for not being afraid to tackle.

Odds of redshirting: Medium

Gates tore his ACL his senior season at Trinity Christian but appears to be healthy and has been spotted going through reps without limitations.

But there has been minimal buzz about Gates since camp has started, and with Jason Marshall, Jalen Kimber, Devin Moore, and fellow freshman Ja’Keem Jackson all in rotation at cornerback, it leaves Gates with a tough task to break the two-deep chart ahead of the Utah game.

Gates could be a prime candidate for special teams while he continues to work, and given the depth chart, if one of the previously four corners mentioned were to get hurt, then Gates would presumably be the next man up for Florida football.
