It isn’t NFL Draft season if there are not a ton of rumors flying around the news. The Florida Gators have some high-profile prospects entering the 2021 NFL Draft, highlighted by the No. 1 overall player Kyle Pitts. However, another Kyle, former Gators quarterback Kyle Trask has become the face of a big rumor flying around social media.

The New Orleans Saints have been lucky enough to have first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees navigating their offense for the last 15 years. It isn’t every day that a quarterback stays with a franchise for 15 years like Brees did, and he was able to win New Orleans one Super Bowl. Brees ultimately decided to retire after the 2020 season, and that has some wondering what the Saints will do at quarterback.

New Orleans re-signed former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston, but it was only a 1-year deal, and the reviews on Winston are far from promising. That is why the report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is so interesting.

Fowler reported that, “Saints “like” Florida QB Kyle Trask as a potential long-term replacement for Drew Brees.”

Now, there is a lot to discuss here, first starting with this is rumor season. A lot of teams leak stuff like this all the time, and reports are incorrect. Fowler is a great reporter, so this isn’t a fake report by him, but it could be a fake report by his source. Who knows, so let’s discuss it as if it were correct, and the Saints do want Trask to be their guy.

Could Kyle Trask really be the guy in New Orleans?

Trask has seen his draft stock go up and down a ton this draft season, and I do not believe he is a franchise quarterback. However, if a team could squeeze the most juice out of the orange, the Saints with head coach Sean Payton would be one of them. Payton is an offensive guru, so he could help develop Trask into a potential starter.

Payton was able to win games with Taysom Hill at quarterback, and even though I am a lot higher on Hill than most, it just highlights how great of a coach Payton is. The Saints are also stacked with weapons, headlined by the best running back in the NFL, Alvin Kamara.

Trask would also have receiver Michael Thomas to throw the ball to and whoever else they add this offseason. I do not think Trask will go in the first round, though it would be interesting to see what New Orleans will do with their first-round pick.

If they wait until the second round, adding Trask may not be the worst idea. I think the Saints would be a great landing spot for Trask, and he could plug in nicely to the offense in New Orleans.

So, if you asked me if Trask can replace Brees in New Orleans, I would surprisingly tell you that I think he can. I am not saying he will produce like Brees; I am just saying it makes a lot of sense for the Saints to draft him as the replacement to their former legend.
