I mentioned yesterday that you shouldn’t forget about former Florida Gators wide receiver Kadarius Toney. The reason I said that was because I have been talking up former Gators tight end Kyle Pitts, who I believe is the No. 1 player in the 2021 NFL Draft. What about the guy throwing the ball to both of these future first-round picks, former Gators quarterback Kyle Trask?

Trask has one of the coolest stories in college football history. He went from being a guy that didn’t start in high school to almost winning the Heisman Trophy in 2020. Trask’s 2020 season was one of the greatest seasons ever in Gators’ history.

He threw for 4,283 yards and 43 touchdowns while adding three rushing touchdowns too. Trask was dominant throwing the football all season and only threw eight interceptions.

The only problem is that Trask threw three interceptions in his final game as a Gator, a blowout loss to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. Trask was benched for rising star Emory Jones and the last thought of Trask in a Gators uniform wasn’t a good one.

The lousy game left many people questioning where Trask would be drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft. Many people had him going in the 1st round before the Cotton Bowl game, but now it seems like things have changed and changed drastically.

More from Hail Florida Hail

Some mock drafts have Trask falling as late as the fourth round! How is this possible? One bad game shouldn’t make him drop that far, right? Well, a lot more goes into it. His lousy game against Oklahoma made people stop watching the highlight plays and start digging into his film.

Personally, I do not think Trask is an elite quarterback. The run he had in 2020 was spectacular, but I think it had more to do with the weapons around him and head coach Dan Mullen’s scheme. There are far too many plays Trask doesn’t make that I have seen that are worrisome for his NFL transition.

Trask isn’t a first-round quarterback in my eyes. I would feel comfortable taking Trask in Round 3. He isn’t going to start in the NFL in Year 1, and honestly, he may never be a starter. I think Trask has a chance to be one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL, though.

Is there a chance that Trask does go get drafted in the 1st round? Absolutely, it’s the NFL Draft, and crazier things have happened. However, I do not think Trask will be drafted in the 1st round.
