Jon Sumrall has had a ton of momentum on the recruiting trail for his first full class at Florida. His class of 2027 is headlined by Maxwell Hiller, and as it stands, the Gators have the third-highest average rating per player in the country.

But with just six commitments to this point, Sumrall is going to need to add more. And while Florida is a finalist for a four-star safety out of Fort Lauderdale, the Gators appear to be playing catch-up to try and land him over some other heavy hitters.

Zayden Gamble announces commitment date

Four-star safety Zayden Gamble announced on social media today that he will be committing on July 16th. Florida is considered a finalist with Notre Dame, Miami, and Ohio State.

Based on comments he made to Rivals, it seems clear, though, that Florida is trailing behind. Earlier this month, Rivals logged a prediction in favor of Notre Dame, while Miami has the lead in their RPM model. 247 also has a crystal ball prediction logged in favor of Notre Dame.

Gamble was on campus over the spring and does have an official visit lined up for this June, so Florida will still have one last shot at trying to sway Gamble. He also has visits lined up with his other three finalists.

When we first profiled Gamble back in February, we noted how productive a player he is:

“Gamble creates his own chaos and isn’t just reliant on being surrounded by other top prospects on the STA defense. His ball hawk skills are solid, his read of plays is great, and his ability to stay patient is really good. Because of his size, he is not the most physical of safeties, but that doesn’t stop him from having a willingness to shoot the gap and come downhill to make plays or to hold the edge as needed.”
