When Scott Stricklin was making the decision to hire Tulane coach Jon Sumrall to be the next head coach of the Florida Gators, he confided with former Gator coaches whom he values the opinions of, including Urban Meyer. Meyer recommended Sumrall, and then on Sunday, when it became official that Sumrall and the Gators were in agreement on a coaching deal, Meyer took to X to endorse Sumrall and to encourage the Gator nation of the type of coach they’re getting.

“What a special day for Gator Nation,” said Meyer. “Welcome head football coach, Jon Sumrall.” Meyer noted that he is one of the top young coaches in the league and is a top five coachin terms of winning percentage in college football. Meyer spent a great amount of time with Sumrall evaluating his team and coaching style. He describes his team as tough, physical, and known for creating a competitive environment.
Urban Meyer endorses Jon Sumrall
Should Sumrall win a championship game this year, it would be his third conference championship in the past four years. Meyer described him a “proven winner” and a “big-time leader,” things Florida fans are looking for in a coach – someone who values winning and plans to bring a winning team to Gainesville.
When Meyer was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, Sumrall was in attendance. He and Meyer discussed the head coaching position and Meyer was a part of the interview process that ultimately led to the hiring of Sumrall.
So maybe our article about whether or not Meyer’s Gainesville visit was true after all as it was revealed he met with Sumrall a couple of weeks ago in Gainesville.
“Welcome to Gator Nation Jon Sumrall and your family,” said Meyer who noted that he looks forward to getting to know Sumrall more and to see what he will do a the University of Florida.
