Last week the Florida Gators were warned that the South Florida match up was a classic trap game.
Obviously, they didn't listen.
The Gators fell to the unranked, unheralded Bulls with a dagger-to- the-heart field goal as time expired in The Swamp.
The team that played better beat the better team.
Here are three things the Gators can do to get back on track before meeting LSU in Death Valley on Saturday.
Quick Fix Number 1 - Suspend Brendan Bett
The first thing Gator Head Coach Billy Napier needs to do is suspend Brendan Bett for one game after the defensive lineman spit on a USF player late in the game, drawing a penalty, and keeping the Bulls game winning drive alive.
Bett was tossed out by the refs, but more needs to be done. There has to be discipline administered.
Napier must show that he is in control of his team. The Gator defense has a lot of talented players and the loss of Bett for one game won't make much difference.
The Gators were their own worst enemy against South Florida. Between a gross amount of penalties and missed assignments, UF gored themselves. Ole!
Quick Fix Number 2 - Actually have Florida mentally prepared
Florida never got on track because of constant miscues (and a few questionable strategy calls from the sideline).
Instead of focusing on X's and O's this week, Napier needs to get his team mentally prepared for Top 10-ranked LSU.
No rah-rah needed. Gator players need to stay focused at the job ahead.
The Gators have the ability to go toe -to- toe with the Tigers and pull off their own major upset like they did last year.
Quick Fix Number 3 - Unleash DJ Lagway
The last piece of the puzzle is to unleash DJ Lagway. The Gator quarterback had moments of brilliance against USF.
Lagway's offseason was slowed by multiple injuries, including a calf strain, hernia and a pesky shoulder issue.
He's got two games under his belt and he's none the worst for wear. It's time to let DJ be DJ.
The Gators have a tremendous offense with plenty of firepower. They raced up and down the field against South Florida, but the penalties and miscues kept them from scoring 50 points on the Bulls.
Summing up, Napier needs to suspend Bett for the LSU game (undisciplined behavior should not be tolerated), mentally prepare his team for this next challenge, and open up the offense.
These are some quick early-season fixes that can get Florida back to its winning ways.
If Napier follows through with these suggestions, take the points.
