Over the years, some of the best players for Florida haven’t been the ones who were the most heralded prior to coming to Gainesville. There are a variety of reasons why a lower-rated player might thrive from a later growth spurt to being the type of player who doesn’t sell out to the summer camp circuit to get their ranking higher.

So with that in mind, this is the biggest recruiting surprise from each recruiting class from the last ten years for the Gators. The rankings in parentheses are based on the 247 Composite ranking from that respective year.

Florida’s biggest recruiting surprise from the last decade

2025 - Jayden Woods (No. 142 overall)

There is still plenty of time for a lower-rated prospect to emerge, and it’s not to say that Jayden Woods was some low-rated bum that had zero expectations coming in, but it’s not like he was a can’t-miss five-star prior to showing up. So, considering the impact he had as a true freshman that made him a hot commodity for the transfer portal, he fits the bill to this point from the class of 2025.

2024 - Jadan Baugh (No. 381 overall)

It seems silly now to look at Jadan Baugh and think he was a surprise, but keep in mind that he was the second RB Florida took in their class of 2024, and most of the hype from that class had been for KD Daniels. Fast forward two seasons later, and Daniels is now with Wake Forest after two non-descript years with Florida, while Baugh has a chance at being a first-round pick in the NFL.

2023 - Bryce Thornton (No. 406 overall)

He may not be the star that Baugh and Woods are, but Bryce Thornton was the 6th lowest rated player out of Florida’s class of 2023 and he has morphed into a steady enough safety who is the highest rated player on Florida’s defense in the CFB 27 video game, for what that’s worth.

2022- Devin Moore (No. 251 overall)

This class is tough to evaluate since it was Billy Napier's transition class, and there are some players like Caleb Douglas who could fit the mold, but also transferred out. If we are going to be pure rankings, you could go with Trey Smack. But since kickers are going to be low anyway, Devin Moore more than outplayed his recruiting ranking and turned himself into a 4th round pick in the most recent NFL Draft.

2021 - Jake Slaughter (No. 697 overall)

This class has several guys who outperformed their rankings, like Desmond Watson and Austin Barber, but it seems almost comical looking back at it that the eventual All-American Jake Slaughter was the third lowest rated player from the class of 2021.

2020 - Anthony Richardson (No. 207 overall)

For as much hype as Gator fans had around Anthony Richardson, for as much of a storyline as he became during Dan Mullen’s final season, and the fact that he wound up being drafted No. 4 overall, it is easy to forget that Richardson was outside the top 200 overall in the class of 2020 and was only the No. 9-rated QB in that class.

2019 - Kingsley Eguakun (No. 680 overall)

One of the interesting storylines from the 2023 season was the fact that Slaughter had to fill in a lot for Kingsley Eguakun, who dealt with an ankle injury for the bulk of the year. But one shouldn’t forget that Eguakun had a really solid 2022 campaign, which was even more impressive given how low-rated he was in 2019.

2018 - Dameon Pierce (No. 201 overall)

Another player who Dan Mullen just didn’t utilize to his fullest, Dameon Pierce wrote himself into Florida folklore for his 2021 season that culminated with a memorable game against FSU. He went on to have a monster rookie season in the NFL in 2022, and while he hasn’t been able to replicate that first season, he has more than punched above his weight from his recruiting ranking.

2017 - Ventrell Miller (No. 562 overall)

His NFL career has been a bit up and down, but Ventrell Miller was extremely reliable during his time with Florida and was about the only player on defense in 2022 who looked like he knew what he was doing. And considering Miller was outside the top 500 in high school, Florida found a gem with him.

2016 - Kyle Trask (No. 2065 overall)

By far, the single biggest recruiting gem Florida has found in the modern era. Given he was in the same class as Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask was never supposed to be anything more than a practice arm for Jim McElwain, and yet he was a throw show in 2020 from arguably winning the Heisman Trophy.
