While the focus around Florida football is almost completely on the future coach of the program, there are still at least five games left in this season.
It's a chance for the Gators to ruin the playoff hopes of some big rivals and kick the Seminoles while they're down. Plus, it's an opportunity for some of the players to finish strong and possibly decide to stay with the program as a new regime takes over.
One of those players is obviously quarterback DJ Lagway, and now we're going to get to see Lagway execute plays from a new offensive coordinator and get a new voice in his ear — Steve Spurrier Jr.
Florida quarterbacks coach Ryan O'Hara is moving upstairs to call plays.

With that, Steve Spurrier Jr. will take on more coaching responsibilities at QB.

There's a lot of uncertainty and frustration around the program right now, but this is legitimately a cool moment for a legacy name to get an opportunity to help Lagway take his game to the next level. Obviously, those of us born before 1990 know what Steve Spurrier Sr. did with Gator quarterbacks and those who didn't witness can certainly read about it.
This is also another example of despite Billy Napier having plenty of guys in the program that could've helped him with coaching, he wanted to do all the jobs by himself. Spurrier Jr. has had a respectable coaching career both with and independent of his father. Maybe if Napier gave him a bigger role on the staff, it could've made a difference. We'll never know.
Where can Lagway make improvements?
The Gators' tough schedule isn't taking a break, not with Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee remaining and all three teams trying to get into the playoffs. But it's a good chance for Lagway to find success against the top teams in the conference.
One area he's going to work on is protecting the football. The five-interception game against LSU obviously stands out, but he also threw a couple more picks this past Saturday against Mississippi State.
Right now, the questions are whether Ryan O'Hara is going to open up the offense and spotlight Lagway, Dallas Wilson and the high-upside receivers more, and if that happens, will Lagway get into a groove as a passer? If Lagway starts to put up big numbers in the final weeks of the season, it's going to lead to a lot of discussion about why changes weren't made earlier.
