If Florida Football fans were hoping for some big time recruiting news on the 4th of July, it unfortunately didn't happen for the Gators.

In an announcement that wasn't a huge surprise going into it, the Gators have missed out on four-star safety Hylton Stubbs as he has announced his plan to play for Miami.

Florida Football: On To The Next One

The recruitment of Stubbs has had plenty of ups and downs. Back in March, insiders believed that Florida was in the lead to land Stubbs. Even when confusion surrounded Keon Young trying to commit to Florida only for the staff to turn it away, most thought it was because Stubbs was bound to be a Gator.

The next day Stubbs committed to Southern California, but few people believed that commitment would stick. Sure enough, Stubbs back off his commitment from USC in June. Tom Loy of 247 quickly logged a prediction for the Gators, but then he took that down once it was clear Miami was in the picture too.

As decision day got closer, it was clear from insiders that Stubbs was choosing Miami.

When we originally profiled Stubbs we said:

"He's not afraid to be physical though. When given the chance to lay the boom, Stubbs will take that opportunity. And he isn't just a back end ball hawk, as he can burst into the backfield when tasked with a blitz and is a sure handed tackler."

The Gators are still in the running for guys like Bryce Fitzgerald and Lagonza Hayward. And given the track record of Miami there is always the possibility that Stubbs will still cycle back and wind up with the Gators.

But for now Florida has missed out on a high priority target who could have been another big piece to jump start the class of 2025.
