Forget what Florida Gators football was in the disastrous Billy Napier era because it's a new day in Gainesville and everyone is continuing to buy-in on what Jon Sumrall is selling.
Nicholas Rome with Saturday Blitz has the Gators at No. 18 in his post-spring top 25, and we can chalk Rome up to the many other national websites that believe Sumrall has built a team that can compete and play in some meaningful games this season.Â
Saturday Blitz believes the Florida Gators are a top-20 team.
Rome has the Gators coming in at No. 18 in his post-spring rankings, up three spots from its No. 21 in its way-too-early rankings. Rome is high on Sumrall and his ability to get the most of the roster, as he writes:
"The excitement coming out of Jon Sumrall's first spring in Gainesville couldn't be much higher as fans are thrilled with where this team is heading. Trammell Jones is making this a real quarterback battle which will only bring the best out of Aaron Philo. The offensive talent on this team alone should give the Gators a great chance to make a splash in the first season with this new regime."Nicholas Rome, Saturday Blitz
Sumrall has won everywhere he's been and won relatively big. In three of his four seasons as a head coach, Sumrall teams have won at least 11 games. That's more than simple luck. There's a process there that has resulted in that kind of success, and it's one that he is trying to install with the Gators. And Sumrall didn't take over a depleted roster. There is a lot of young talent on both sides of the ball that has the ability to play at high level in the SEC like wide receiver Dallas Wilson, running back Jadan Baugh and edge rusher Jayden Woods.
Are there plenty of questions remaining? Yes. The Gators have yet to decide on a quarterback and Tramell Jones Jr. is making it tough on the coaches to decide. Are there some unproven players that will be asked to take big steps forward on the roster? Absolutely. And Sumrall acknowledges this. Listen to any interview the man has given (and there have been plenty) and he's clearly not close to satisfied with what the Gators did this spring, and he's not hiding the fact that he expects the players to put in a lot of work over the next few months if they want to make these top-25 projections come to fruition.Â
Whether Sumrall wants the expectations or not, they are here and after the past few years, Gator fans are begging for something to believe in. The college football media is already sold, but the on-field results will tell the real story.Â
