Thursday night could not have gone more poorly for former Florida Gators and current Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson. The 2023 No. 4 draft pick has been in a QB battle this training camp with Daniel Jones and was given the start in the preseason opener for the Colts.
But Richardson took a hard hit on a sack during his second drive and was forced to leave the game with a dislocated pinky. And while he is listed as "day-to-day," the images of the direction his pinky bent make it look like a miracle it wasn't worse.

But if you want an idea of how mangled his pinky was after taking a sack in the first quarter, the replay showed his pinky bending in a way it isn't supposed to bend.
Replay of #Colts QB Anthony Richardson’s finger injury on his right/throwing hand. Looks like it’s his pinky, which obviously isn’t supposed to point that way. pic.twitter.com/Y3PCniZ92X

The still frame view shows just how twisted his pinky got.
I'm not a doctor, but I don't think Anthony Richardson's pinky is supposed to do that.. pic.twitter.com/A5kgGjtzSV

Richardson has been taking some heat on social media for taking the sack in the first place. The common consensus from several national members of the media and/or former NFL players is that Richardson should have spotted the blitz in his pre-snap read and hit his hot route well before ever taking the hit.
Richardson was drafted No. 4 overall in 2023 after one full season as the starter with the Florida Gators in 2022. A shoulder injury cut his 2023 season short, and he had a rocky road in 2024 that included being benched midseason.
Richardson has been in a battle with Jones this offseason, and the original plan was for Richardson to start game one with Jones starting game two.
We'll see if Richardson's early exit impacts plans going forward or if Richardson's fate has been sealed.
