Lane Kiffin is trying to beat Jon Sumrall and Florida to the punch with 5-star DL target

The Gators have made up a ton of ground with Jalen Brewster, but the top defensive lineman in the country will visit Baton Rouge this weekend

The first real weekend of official visits hasn't even started yet and Lane Kiffin is already becoming a menace.

Jalen Brewster, who the Florida Gators have gotten a lot of traction with over the past several weeks, will be taking an official visit to LSU this weekend. The five-star defensive lineman seems to be taking his visit schedule week-by-week and this trip to Baton Rouge should be concerning for Jon Sumrall.

5-star DL Jalen Brewster will visit LSU this weekend

Brewster started his official visit schedule last month when he took a trip to Indiana, and he's also been on an official trip to SMU. There's no longer a limit on official visits, but a prospect can only take one official per school, so Brewster seems to be playing this all to the max, which he has the ability to do because he's an elite recruit.

We don't know if Florida and Brewster have already worked out a weekend for him to come to Gainesville. It would be smart to assume it's in the works, but this is some nasty work by Kiffin to upstage Sumrall after the Gators coach has been putting in some time to get in the picture for the top-ranked player in this class. The Gators already have a top-10 class and this staff deserves a lot of credit for that, but Brewster would immediately shift this class from very good to one that could be CFP worthy in a year or two.

If nothing else, Kiffin and LSU made the first big splash of official visit season and that was something that I believe Sumrall was hunting for, especially after getting him on campus for the spring game. If Brewster had made it to Gainesville this weekend, the headlines would be, "Jon Sumrall is ready to make the Gators into a powerhouse," and instead, the headlines are "Lane Kiffin is proving LSU made the right choice." It's just not good.

Jalen Brewster holds all the cards in this recruitment

The biggest reason why Florida needed to get this visit now is because you never know when Brewster is going to shut it down. He's already committed to Texas Tech, and we know that they have big dollars, so he might just decide that he's made his point and doesn't want to deal with it anymore. That's one of the big perks of being the top-ranked player in the country. Again, the Gators could and should get an official visit from Brewster in the very near future, but the splash factor won't be the same and Sumrall is trying to make big splashes in this ocean.

This weekend is packed with official visitors. There are 18 recruits on the schedule, including seven commitments and that will be discussed more as Friday approaches. But one player that will not be in Gainesville this weekend, at least not officially, is five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller. The top-ranked interior offensive lineman in the class is scheduled for the final visit weekend of the summer on June 19. Could Sumrall be trying to get Hiller and Brewster on campus at the same time for a little five-star bonding time? It wouldn't surprise me.
