Josh Pate singles out a Florida unit that could carry this team in 2026

Florida's wide receiver group might be among the best in the country

As initial Vegas odds have started to creep out, Florida hasn’t been given much hope in Jon Sumrall’s maiden voyage with the Gators. Early win/loss totals have the line for Florida in 2026 set at 6.5 wins.

But it’s not that crazy to think Florida could smash those expectations as one particular position group for Florida could create the explosive offense that was lacking in the Billy Napier Era.

Josh Pate says Florida has a top five wide receiver group

One of the positive parting gifts that Billy Napier left behind for Sumrall was the 1-2 punch of Vernell Brown III and Dallas Wilson. In fact, throughout the Napier Era, the wide receiver room tended to be solid, which is why it was infuriating they were relegated to the roles they had (AKA Tre Wilson running 57 jet sweeps a game).

Throw in the addition of Auburn transfer Eric Singleton, who was with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner at Georgia Tech, and college football personality Josh Pate seems to think Florida has a top-five wide receiver room in the country:

“I put Florida in the fifth spot because I believe that it's the most underrated wide receiver room in the country. So Vernell Brown is there, Dallas Wilson in year two. Eric Singleton is really the key to all this to me, because if he ends up becoming what some people thought he could become, transferring from Georgia Tech to Auburn, if that just gets delayed a year, and I think it will, of course, given the health of all these guys. I think he's going to explode this year.

TJ Abrams, (Bailey) Stockton. There's a lot of blue-chip depth here. So I think that if they do nothing else down there, Jon Sumrall has got a top-five wide receiver room on the field this year.“

Part of what should make this room so dangerous is that Faulkner is known for getting receivers into space and letting them do damage. The quality, as Pate points out, will be the health of the room. Dallas Wilson missed the vast majority of 2025 and has already missed time this spring. Vernell Brown III also missed time last season.

The ironic part is that Pate praises Florida’s wide receivers and didn’t even get to their top recruit from the class of 2026, Davian Groce, who has the potential to be a matchup nightmare himself.

Whether or not Florida has a QB who gets them the ball is another debate, but if this is a legit top-five room, combined with the threat of Jadan Baugh, it might not matter who is behind center because the Gators will have so many weapons to work with.
