It is still so incredibly early, but it looks as though Florida might have something special at head coach in Jon Sumrall. He has won everywhere he has been, but the Florida job is way different than that of Tulane or Troy. That being said, Sumrall seems to have a great read on recruitment, especially when it comes to evaluating, signing, and then developing Florida guys. He even went on local TV in Tampa!
Sumrall caught up with Scott Smith at FOX 13 Tampa Bay to explain the fertile recruiting soil in Florida.
"Well, the skill and talent in the State of Florida, we're very blessed. We don't have to go very far to find great football players. We're also very fortunate we've got a lot of great high school programs and good coaching. So football matters in the State of Florida at every level. You can tell that. You can walk into the high schools and sense the importance of the game."
He continued by saying that Florida may be somewhat of a national brand, but you must win at home.
"Now we do have what I would consider a national brand of sorts. You see the Gator head, or you see the script Gators. You recognize that in California, New York, wherever. But in the State of Florida, we're really fortunate we got a lot of great players and coaches right here."
Sumrall is saying this for two reasons: To rally up the fanbase, and to build relationships with coaches.

It will take some time, but so far, so good for the new Florida coach. How should we feel about all this?
Jon Sumrall knows exactly what he is doing to appeal to Florida coaches
This is everything, in a nutshell... Sumrall is from Alabama, played at Kentucky, and coached most notably at Troy and Tulane prior to taking over at Florida. He may know all about high school football talent all over the southeastern region, but Florida is a different animal. It is a talent-laden state, one that has four Power Four programs in it, as well as several others competing at the Group of Six level.
While he may take the occasional home-run cut on a high-variance local product, it is all starting to come together for Sumrall on the recruiting trail. The combination of high-end players from all over the country coming in, coupled with intriguing players from The Sunshine State is how you build up a winning football culture at Florida. This has been a recipe for success for previous star head coaches.
Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer found the right mix of in-state and out-of-state talent during their illustrious tenures at Florida. Neither was from the state, but they became every bit the fabric of what makes Gators football so special. It is still too early to tell, but Sumrall seems to be cut from their same cloth. Spurrier won at Duke before Florida, while Meyer thrived at Bowling Green and at Utah.
To tie a bow on this, regularly competing with the likes of Florida State, Miami, and whoever else for the top-flight recruits in-state will only keep Sumrall and his staff more on their game. Florida stands a halfway decent chance to surprise some people this season. Let it be known that if Sumrall is truly the right head coach to lead Florida to the promised land, it shall present itself midway through 2027.
Wishful thinking or not, Sumrall is acting the part in front of a camera to be the guy Florida deserves.
