When Jon Sumrall took over for Billy Napier, one of his first challenges was roster retention. It’s one thing to identify that players like Jadan Baugh are talented players, but it was a whole different challenge to keep and retain them as Gators.
With the season slated to get underway, Sumral spoke on his sales pitch he used to retain the bulk of the talent in Gainesville that went beyond any NIL efforts.
Jon Sumrall highlights sales pitch to keep Jadan Baugh
During a special on the SEC Network, Sumrall spoke on a range of topics, and at one point the topic of his transition to take over as the head coach at Florida popped up. Sumrall had given Baugh a shoutout during his intro press conference, but had to make a massive push in December to make sure Baugh didn’t bolt for Texas.
The approach Sumrall took is one that is a bit of a lost art form in the modern era of NIL:
“Jadan Baugh can walk into any restaurant in the city of Gainesville. Everybody knows who he is. Why start over? Why go do something that it's not yours? It's somebody else's, and you're just helping chip into what they've already got going on. Why not be a part of it? Like one of the guys that was a part of the change that stayed and said, hey, when things weren't going good, when a Hail Mary got hit on you to cost you a game, stand up on your feet, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and let's do something different here.
Let’s make something that's a lasting called a legacy because you didn't run and hide from something that was going wrong. You actually stayed.
And so this program is bigger than a coach. It's bigger than any single player, but getting them to buy into the idea that we can do whatever we want right here. And going and being a part of somebody else's team doesn't make it your team. This is your team. Stay here. Lead this team. Help us get this thing going.”

Florida history rewards players who create defining moments
To Sumrall’s point, even during losing seasons there have been opportunities to cement oneself as a Gator great. Not that long ago, it was fellow running back Dameon Pierce putting Florida on his back to pick up a win over FSU. He would go on to play in the Gasparilla Bowl even though he could have opted out. When asked why he was playing, he said:
“Why? Because I’m a Gator, bro. When I signed here, I signed for four good years, get my education and I’m going to rock out that way until I die, you know.”
The thing about a place like Florida is that all it takes is one moment to be forever remembered. Brandon Spikes was an All-American and is best known for getting in the face of Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno. Major Wright is still remembered for decapitating Oklahoma during the national title game. Ike Hillard broke the ankles of FSU in his own national title game. Tyrie Cleveland caught a Hail Mary. Tim Tebow once made a speech.
Baugh had his moment like that last year when he ran for 266 yards against FSU. But imagine how subdued that moment would have been if Baugh had then bolted in the offseason? DJ Lagway had a similar type of moment against FSU in 2024, but since he is gone, that moment isn’t going to be as fondly remembered in Gainesville.
We’ll see how 2026 plays out and what kind of season Baugh has.
But if he does become the lynchpin that turns the ship around in Gainesville, his legacy might live on for decades and decades.
