December was a bit of a whirlwind for Florida fans as we were still processing and getting to know Jon Sumrall. During this timeframe, the SEC released the order in which Florida would play their nine SEC opponents in 2026; almost instantly, the opener against Auburn was circled.
Because while Florida will face some more established programs down the road, today’s opener is as apples-to-apples of a comparison as Sumrall is going to get all year, and tonight is a massive litmus test to see if all the things he has preached since December actually hold weight.

Some would say it is unfair to place lofty expectations on a first-year coach, especially one who had to take over a program that has had one winning season in the last five years. And as we have said all offseason, we aren’t expecting Sumrall to come in and win the national title in 2026.
But that doesn’t mean we can have zero expectations, especially considering the roster that Florida has on paper. And tonight, Auburn will have a ton of similarities in terms of where they are at as a program. They, too, have a first-year coach out of the American Conference who had to flip a good chunk of the roster via the transfer portal.
In Auburn’s case, they opted to bring over 13 guys from USF. Sumrall took a different approach, but the guys taking the field tonight are the ones he handpicked.
A win tonight represents a proof of concept. A loss opens the door to examine the warts.
A win makes all of Sumrall’s fiery talks hold weight. A loss turns them into a meme.
A win gives Florida a real pathway to start the season 6-0 at a minimum. A loss creates the paranoia and possibility of 3-3 or worse.
Florida is favored, and all the metrics would say that, as a whole, Florida has the better roster on paper. But that was the problem with The Man in the Black Polo; he too often had the better roster on paper only to fall flat. And looking back at his era, there should have been some red lights flashing after Florida lost to Kentucky one week after beating Utah.
Starting at 7 PM, Sumrall has a three-and-a-half-hour window to prove that this era of Florida Football is different and not just a rerun of the last guy.
