One of the key moments from Saturday’s win was the run from Tramell Jones on 3rd down that sealed the game. Florida had taken over after recovering a fumble, but still needed a 1st down to ice the game away. The Gators took over on the 39-yard line, and had they not gotten the 1st down, Florida would have been faced with an interesting decision of whether or not to attempt a field goal.

While the Gators never had to make that decision, Florida’s cinematic video made it seem like Sumrall would have made a bold decision had that come to pass.

Jon Sumrall might have gone for it on 4th down against Texas

It’s been a couple of weeks since we got a cinematic recap from Florida, since, you know, the last couple of weeks were a blowout loss. The theme Sumrall took into the Texas game was “Do simple better,” and his whole mantra was having a willingness to get up and fight.

After Florida got a strip sack on Arch Manning with 1:58 left in the 4th quarter, Texas still had all three timeouts, so if Florida failed to get a first down, the Longhorns would have gotten the ball back. The camera in the recap panned to Sumrall, who made it known what he wanted from his offense:

“We are not f****** kicking a field goal! Four downs, ten f****** yards! Man the f*** up! Man the f*** up!”

After getting stuffed on two running plays to Jaden Baugh, Jones kept it on 3rd down and ran to the outside to pick up nine yards to seal the game.

One, any notion that Sumral has been muzzled for this language has been put to rest.

Two, it would have been a fascinating decision for Sumrall had Jones been stopped at the line of scrimmage on 4th and 7 from the 36-yard line. Would he have stuck to his guns and still gone for it, knowing a 1st down ended the game?

Because the flip side is that if Florida had opted for a field goal and made it, which wouldn’t have been automatic, the Longhorns would have gotten the ball back with about 1:30 left with no timeouts and needing a touchdown. One could also argue that if this was the plan all along, why not attempt some type of slant on Texas, given how hard they were selling out on the run?

But it all worked out in part because Jones embodied the mentality that Sumrall preached about all week in the recap. And Florida is now 5-2 as a result.
