Now that quarterback DJ Lagway has found his new home, it's worth revisiting comments made by Jon Sumrall earlier this week when he said that he wished the former Gators quarterback well, and he did not run him off.

Before Lagway made the announcement that he would enter the transfer portal, he and Sumrall met and, at the time, it was reported that the results of the meeting led to Lagway's announcement. The Gators coach, however, tried to clear the air about what happened.

"This culture is going to be built on toughness and love of football. If you fit that, great. If you don't, then that's not going to be good," Sumrall recalls what he said to Lagway. "Would love to have you stay here if you're comfortable with some ground rules that are laid out, and it was his decision to leave. He was not forced out of here by any stretch of the imagination. I'm for him being successful, wherever he goes next, unless we play against him at some point."

The good news for both sides is that they can continue to wish each other success, since Baylor and Florida aren't scheduled to meet on the gridiron any time soon, unless it happens in a bowl or the college football playoffs.

Lagway heads back to his home state

To the surprise of very few, Lagway committed to Baylor and will be the QB1 for the Bears in the upcoming season. Although Lagway flirted with Florida State and Virginia, it always felt like his preference was to return closer to home and Baylor gave him that option.

In two seasons with the Gators, Lagway threw for 4,179 yards with 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions over 19 starts. Florida was 10-9 in the games that Lagway started. At times, Lagway looked every bit like the five-star prospect he was coming out of high school, but he struggled to put it together this season outside of a few bright moments.

Now he'll get a fresh start at Baylor and Sumrall can continue to build the Gators' roster to his vision.Β
