It never hurts to have a National Championship-winning head coach in your corner, and that's exactly what Jon Sumrall has at Florida.
The Gators' newest head coach turned to a legend, asking none other than Urban Meyer for advice before he even took the job in Gainesville, and Meyer's response may have been the best thing Sumrall has ever heard.
"I kind of feel like I’m talking to myself 20 years ago," Meyer said, according to Sumrall's account of the conversation.
"I was like, 'Can you say that again?'" Sumrall said. "That was one of the coolest sideways compliments I’ve ever gotten."
Urban Meyer clearly believes in Jon Sumrall at Florida
Of course, 20 years ago, Meyer won the 2006 BCS National Championship with the Florida Gators. So, comparing Sumrall to himself at that time is the highest form of praise that one coach could give another.
Jon Sumrall says on his call with Urban Meyer before accepting the Florida job, Meyer told him:

Yes, Meyer went on to win another national title with the Gators just two years later (2008), and won another National Championship when he was the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. However, it's hard to beat Meyer's reign with Florida in 2006.
Sumrall, of course, has only been a collegiate head coach for five years, just wrapping up his two-year tenure with the Tulane Green Wave. Yet, when Meyer won the title with the Gators, he was only in his sixth year as a head coach.
Sumrall has a lot of pressure on him as the head coach of the Gators, no matter what or who Meyer had compared him to. However, a vote of confidence from Meyer would mean a lot for anyone in the game, much less someone coaching in Gainesville.
Florida is set to kick off its first season under Sumrall's leadership with an in-state matchup against the FAU Owls on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Gainesville. Then, Sumrall's first SEC matchup will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 19, with a road game against the Auburn Tigers.
