It could be a different season at Florida. With Billy Napier gone and DJ Lagway transferring to Baylor, the Gators needed to find the right head coach/quarterbacking tandem to help usher in a new era. Coming over from Tulane was the rising coaching star that is Jon Sumrall. After hiring Buster Faulkner away from Georgia Tech as his offensive coordinator, they were able to land Aaron Philo in the portal.

Sumrall spoke about Philo's overall progress while appearing on 680 The Fan in Atlanta on Thursday.

"[Aaron] Philo has a strong arm, quick release, very talented. Has time on task in the system, having been with Buster [Faulkner] previously. Has done a really good job of inserting himself into this program. Had a really good spring and did a lot of great things. Has to continue to work on ball security, like all quarterbacks. We can't turn the football over."

While his intangibles seem to be quite high, Sumrall needs for Philo to slow it down with the turnovers.

Here is everything Sumrall said while appearing on The Locker Room on 680 The Fan over in Atlanta.

After throwing two picks in the spring game, Philo will have his work cut out for him ahead of Week 1.

Jon Sumrall loves Aaron Philo's upside, but he needs better ball security

Although Sumrall would love to clean up at home in recruitment, he does recognize that Florida is a national brand. Philo may hail from the neighboring State of Georgia, but to get a guy who already hates the Bulldogs with every fiber of his being is only a good thing for the Gators. He was a player many people thought would replace Haynes King as the starting quarterback in Atlanta for Brent Key.

However, Sumrall being able to poach Faulkner away from Georgia Tech changed the entire trajectory of Philo's blossoming college football career. Despite the Yellow Jackets having had a decent run of success recently under Key, Florida is the program with the much higher upside. You can win national championships at Florida. At some point in the future, this school will make its first trip to the playoff.

Right now, Gator Nation needs to have some level of patience when it comes to Philo under center. While he did look the part at times at Georgia Tech, he only had limited in-game experience. Playing as a backup in the ACC and being the starter in the SEC are two different entities. In truth, we should expect Faulkner to put Philo into advantageous situations to succeed while he finds his SEC footing.

As it has been the case with everything Sumrall has said so far, he is not afraid to be publicly critical.
