Jon Sumrall jokes “I think it was AI” after profane Florida celebration goes viral

Jon Sumrall may be from Alabama and played at Kentucky, but in less than a year, he is a Florida Man through and through.

That’s a good thing, by the way.

Sumrall has been able to strike the right tone of intensity without coming off as a scumbag. He is a lunatic who is also quite controlled. And perhaps the coaching style some previous coaches have had in Gainesville would work in different sports or even for different teams.

But a viral video that emerged from Florida’s post game celebration highlights the exact type of energy that Florida fans have been begging for the past decade.

Jon Sumrall isn’t interested in telling Auburn “Good game”

A video went viral on Sunday from X user @Orange_Blue_G8r that had the Florida Victorious logo in the corner. We see Sumrall entering the locker room after Florida’s win to a rowdy group of Gators, and the first words out of his mouth were:

“Hey, hey, I got one thing to say. F*** EM!”

Florida’s players responded in kind.

He wasn’t done after the team waited for the next line:

“GO MOTHER F****** GATORS!”

Now, this would be a little over the top if it were against Campbell, and some could argue that it’s over the top for a win over an unranked Auburn squad, but this is where understanding Sumrall’s mentality is a must.

In his pregame speech before Florida’s opener against FAU, he made the point that there aren’t that many actual football games that get played. Throw in the backdrop that Sumrall’s name was at least floated for the Auburn job, whether or not he was actually a real candidate is up for debate, and there was a sense of catharsis for Sumrall when the clock hit zero.

Sumrall was asked about the video at his press conference on Monday. He jokingly played off the moment:

“My wife's tried for years to get me to stop. That's not going real well for either one of us.”

He later joked, in the same response, said:

“We don't allow video in the locker room from our players. That must have been a spy that snuck in. I think it was AI. Somebody told me it was AI, so I think it was AI. Not real. It was not real.” 

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Still, compared to the soliloquies from previous coaches who resided in Gainesville, Sumrall’s attitude and mindset are the exact kick in the, um, butt that the Gators have needed for years.
