Florida’s physical edge at Auburn brings its offseason promises to life

We have chronicled at length the amateur hour weight room that existed in Gainesville under The Man in the Black Polo. Just as a reminder, if one dared to question the state of the weight room during the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, in particular, you were told you didn’t know what you were talking about.

We’ll state this:

On Saturday at Auburn, the Gators backed up all the offseason talk about an improved weight room and put on a masterclass of physicality that we seldom saw in previous years.

Florida dominates Auburn with physicality in win

There are a cache of moments to pick out where Florida just looked like a straight-up bully to the Tigers. Early on, Emmanuel Oyrbadejo bull-rushed Auburn’s LT and pancaked him into the ground en route to a sack. It’s the type of rep that one will see from a dominant four- or five-star on their high school film, but seldom will one see in an SEC game.

On Duke Clark’s TD that made things 14-3, Bailey Stockton and Amir Jackson both delivered bruising blocks downfield to clear the way for a 20-yard TD on 3rd and goal.

Speaking of downfield blocks, Jadan Baugh got into the action and delivered a punishing block of his own.

But the moment that got everyone's attention was Baugh’s 4th-and-1 touchdown that essentially sealed the game for Florida. Tight end Lacota Dippre was lined up as a fullback on the play and delivered a soul-crushing block on two Auburn defenders that cleared the way for Baugh’s TD. For as much as we were told, Florida had “blocking” tight ends over the last four years. It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen a moment like that.

All this reminds us of one of the early moments in the previous guy’s tenure when it was clear there was a problem with their strength program. If we rewind to their loss to Kentucky in 2023, the Gators got straight up bullied in that game. We said after that game that:

“But only one of the two teams on the field in Lexington looked like they wanted to be there, and it wasn’t the Florida Gators.”

Jon Sumrall and strength coach Rusty Whitt talked all season about being physical and getting stronger. Up until Saturday, that was just words. We now have direct proof of concept of just how hard-nosed the Gators are going to be in 2026.

It’s a new era indeed in Gainesville.
