Jon Sumrall is treating the Florida job like the opportunity it should be

Ever since getting hired at Florida, Jon Sumrall has acted a little bit like a kid in a candy store. That’s not a bad thing, as Sumrall has brought a level of enthusiasm to the sorely missing program. 

And during his remarks ahead of fall camp starting, Sumrall once again made sure to highlight how thankful he is to have the opportunity he is going to have in 2026 and beyond.

Jon Sumrall is fired up to be at Florida

Sumrall’s final question of his 30-minute press conference was about his own level of excitement and how anxious he is to get rolling with his first official fall camp as the head coach at Florida.

It’s safe to say that Sumrall has a fire in him that is needed in Gainesville:

“Yeah, I'm excited. Look, I mean, we're at the University of Florida. Like, holy cow. Like, we get to play the greatest game in the world at one of the greatest universities in the world. There's so many things about it that I'm like, I was at my house late last night. I looked at my wife. I'm like, man, here it is. Let's go. It's time. And so, you know, I feel very privileged to be where I'm at and could not be more fired up about watching this team grow.” 

Now, some might point out that Billy Napier, on paper, said similar things. Last year, he opened up his fall camp press conference with:

"Obviously, excited to be back at it, and it's a fun time of the year. I think it's good to see some energy in the building. The players had a couple of days off. For them to be back, and then obviously as a staff, as an organization, to be kind of running at full speed ahead here as we approach an exciting time of the year.”

But let’s also be honest, this is where the words and actions between Sumrall and Napier aren’t the same.

Sumrall’s enthusiasm feels different from ordinary coach speak

Among the many flaws of Napier, he never acted like he was all in on the Gator brand. It’s a small gripe among a sea of larger ones, but he insisted on wearing black all the time and seldom was seen in actual Gator colors. When he claimed he was excited, it was with the same deadpan delivery someone like Ben Stein would have.

In many ways, Napier was like a cat who would sit on his perch and insist that you come to him to praise him.

Sumrall, meanwhile, feels like a dog who wakes up and finds everything about Florida to be the greatest thing ever. His comments on Tuesday aren’t one-off comments, as he has stated all offseason long how grateful he is for this opportunity with Florida. And much like in this comment, Sumrall has made it a point that Florida shouldn’t be treated as a second-tier program that needs minor miracles to win.

He understands the expectation is to win, or we will keep searching until we find someone who does.

And to that point, Sumrall can be as genuine as he wants and as enthusiastic as he wants. In the very near future, he will be judged more on his ability to win on the field versus his ability to win press conferences.

But what has Florida fans excited is that if Sumrall does win on the field, his message is going to be “Look at what WE have done” versus “Look at what I have done.”
