Hope is in the air as Florida is set to hit the field for fall camp, the first of the Jon Sumrall Era. Even though Florida is unranked in the preseason Coaches’ Poll, there are plenty of reasons for Gator fans to think things will be better compared to the last five years.
Sumrall mostly seems to have the same sentiment; however, at his press conference on Tuesday, he admitted one of the primary areas of growth Florida needs to have this fall to reach those goals.
Jon Sumrall wants Florida to turn flashes into habits
Sumrall was asked early on during his press conference where he felt Florida most needed to improve in the fall to be competitive for the 2026 season. His answer mostly echoced what he has been saying since he got to Gainesville:
“We've got to continue to grow as a team and come together and have synergy. We've got to have certain guys elevate at certain spots to play winning-level football that still have some question marks. Just consistency. There were some flashes of times in spring where I'm like, ‘Oh, this could be really good’, but the consistency wasn't always there.
We have to get into a space where we bring it every day, and you cannot calculate your effort you give by how you feel. Being tough is being at your best no matter what the circumstances are around you. And so our guys got to get in a routine of every time we go out to practice, it's a great practice because we're showing up. We're going to show up.”
His comments about the lack of consistency line up with what we saw all throughout the Billy Napier Era. As much as Napier talked about wanting a process-oriented team, that process was a mystery box from week to week. One week the Gators were good enough to beat Texas, Ole Miss, or LSU. The next week, they were losing to USF, Vanderbilt, or Kentucky.
The flashes Sumrall mentioned are in line with what we think the talent is on Florida’s roster. One of the maddening things from the Napier Era was the feeling that the Gators had the players to flash but could just never piece it all together.
Sumrall talked about needing “certain guys elevate at certain spots to play winning-level football.” Based on the comments he made all spring, there is a good chance that’s a reference to the offensive line, who he did praise later on for making strides this summer.
As will be the case with everything that goes on in August, there is going to be a ton of reading between the lines with Sumrall and Florida until they take the field for real in September. But based on what we have seen, his analysis isn’t far off as we are one month away from Florida Gators Football being back for real.
