Jon Sumrall is imposing a level of detail Florida didn't have under Billy Napier

Unlike the last guy, Sumrall actually appears to be detail oriented

One of the running gags during the Billy Napier Era at Florida was his insistence that the Gators were “detail-oriented.” Napier often preached attention to detail, but Florida often looked like a team that couldn’t get things right that one would still expect a winless JV team to figure out.

We still have to see what the Gators will look like when they take the field for real in September, but if Jon Sumrall’s description of Florida’s first spring practice is any indication, the Gators should be far more prepared in 2026 than they ever were between 2022 and 2025.

Practice? Jon Sumrall is talking about practice

At his press conference on Tuesday, following Florida’s first spring practice, Sumrall went into detail about the preparation that took place to pull off their first session in pads. Sumrall highlighted how Florida had just beaten “The Gauntlet” last Wednesday, and so it wasn’t until Friday that he even talked to his players about how an actual practice would go.

And the way Sumrall described it, he wanted to make sure everything went smoothly from day one:

"Friday, we did a mock practice because I'm like an OCD maniac when it comes to detail and a lot of that stuff. I just don't like to leave it to chance and hope we show up and practice goes good. So we practiced practice because I want practice to go good.”

It may seem silly to some, but it is refreshing considering what Florida fans had to endure under Napier. It was downright comical at times how often the Gators couldn’t get the correct number of players on the field, or how often they had to take a timeout on offense coming out of a timeout. For as often as Napier talked about caring about the details, we’re not actually convinced he relayed any of that information to his players. The Gators frequently committed errors that had nothing to do with talent and everything to do with a lack of organization.

So, for Sumrall to actually go into detail on how he is stressing the details rather than use it as a buzzword he hopes we all play along with, we will give him high marks in that regard.

We still have to see it in action, but Florida fans should grow increasingly confident between now and September.
