Aaron Philo wastes no time at Florida spring ball making fans forget about DJ Lagway

The new Gators quarterback has everyone excited and he's also got a lot of competition this spring

The Gators might have a dude at quarterback...or potentially a couple of dudes.

Today was the start of spring practice and there's already clips of Aaron Philo, Trammel Jones Jr. and freshman Will Griffin tossing the pill around...and it just LOOKS different. All eyes are clearly on Philo, who was acquired from the transfer portal after two seasons at Georgia Tech.

All three quarterbacks looked good on the first day from what we were able to see. They looked like they were ready to work and compete. There's a lot ahead for spring practice, and we'll learn more as the season goes along and we'll get clips from 7v7, 11v11 to see their accuracy. Eventually we'll also get a better idea of the mobility, ability to see the field, ability to feel the pass rush, etc. etc.

But for the first day, seeing them in action and interacting with the new coaching staff and the receivers (sans Dallas Wilson) is pretty exciting.

Jon Sumrall says the QBs will decide who starts

The general belief is that the starting quarterback job is Philo's to lose. He is Buster Faulkner's hand-picked guy and the one that everyone is looking at to be the successor to DJ Lagway. Philo's sample size at Georgia Tech wasn't huge, but it was very promising, and he was penciled in as the Yellow Jackets' starter in 2026 before Faulker came to Gainesville and brought the redshirt sophomore with him.

However, Sumrall isn't going to rush the decision and believes that it'll happen when it's supposed to happen as long as everyone is doing the right things.

"I don't ever put a timeline on it. You know, like when I took the job at Tulane, I wanted to have one named sooner than later, and I named one like a week before the first game, and it was the last guy everybody thought it was going to be," he said. "I don't decide who starts, believe it or not. They do, by how they practice. We'll let the guys compete. And they're competing with each other, not against each other."

Sumrall saves a special shout out to freshman Will Griffin

If anyone got the attention of fans and those in attendance today, it was Griffin. The freshman from Tampa put some mustard on his throws, and it did not go unnoticed by Sumrall.

"Yeah, Will's got a cannon, man. I don't know if you've ever noticed, but he's got big, strong hands," Sumrall added. "He's got really big hands, which help you with the grip and throwing the football. I've been very pleased with what he's doing so far and excited about what lies ahead for him. Very talented kid."
