As is typically the case in college football, the writing was on the wall for the entire Florida Gators coaching staff once Billy Napier was fired midway through the season. Billy Gonzales took over as the interim coach and went 1-4 to close out the season before Jon Sumrall was officially hired as Florida’s next coach.
And while we thought there might be a couple of holdovers who would stick around in Gainesville, it is clear that Sumrall is cleaning house in Gainesville.
Jon Sumrall is bringing an all-new staff to Florida
As it stands right now based on reports from multiple outlets, defensive line coach Gerald Chatman is the only assistant coach that Sumrall has officially retained for Florida. Chatman came to Florida from Tulane in 2024, but he didn’t directly cross paths with Sumrall, as that’s when Sumrall just arrived.
The only two we were slightly surprised weren’t retained were Gonzales and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, though Juluke’s suspension for slapping an LSU player probably didn’t help his cause.
Of the assistants let go, Juluke and Ron Roberts have the most notable new jobs as Juluke has been linked Kentucky in the same role, but according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports he is also a potential target for Texas. Roberts is off to Arkansas.
Napier will be at James Madison in 2026, and he has already hired linebacker coach Robert Bala to be his defensive coordinator.
Sumrall has only officially hired Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech to be his offensive coordinator and Brad White from Kentucky to be his defensive coordinator.
What will be worth keeping an eye on as Sumrall continues to fill the staff is what is the Power Four experience of each coach, because one of the downfalls of the Billy Napier Era was his reliance on coaches who had next to no business being in the SEC and who had next to no Power Four experience prior to coming to Florida.
