One of the arguments that gets made from time to time is that fans should stay positive with their team no matter how bad things get. This was put to the test during the previous coaching era at Florida and caused a bit of infighting among Gator Nation. Our stance here at Hail Florida Hail is that Florida can not expect fans to pay the type of money they are paying towards the Gators and not be expected to have a voice when things go poorly.
The previous coach in Gainesville seemed to think outside critiques were just people being petty. Jon Sumrall, at least for now, seems to welcome the critiques coming Florida’s way after their meltdown against Missouri on Saturday.
Jon Sumrall not shy to criticism after getting blown out
These next couple of weeks are going to be a test of whether Sumrall’s messaging has weight to it. His rough-and-tumble attitude has been a breath of fresh air to open the 2026 season.
But that attitude is more fun when Florida is winning. On Saturday, they were outclassed up and down the field by the same Missouri squad that had lost to Mississippi State the week before.
To his credit, Sumrall isn’t trying to pretend that fan criticisms of Saturday’s performance are out of line:
“I've told everybody, one of the greatest things about being at the University of Florida is, man, we've got an awesome fan base that's ultra passionate. Like, that's why I came here, because this place, man, people care about it.
Well, the flip side of that is when things aren't going good, you've got to have broad shoulders and shoulder the critique, and that's great. Internally, I have to help our guys just understand, hey, how do we get on the other side of this?”
In time, we’ll see whether that messaging sticks, but it is a 180 from the previous guy. As we said throughout the previous era in Gainesville, the Gators were led by a guy who wanted praise the instant anything went right. And when things weren’t going right, people who dared to put out the very real flaws the program had were just “bad fans” who didn’t know what they were talking about.
Remember when Florida was embarrassed by Miami in The Swamp, and The Man in the Black Polo responded with:
“If we can focus on those things and not necessarily what some guy in his basement is saying in rural central Florida on social media, then we got a chance to get better, right?”
The subliminal message was “Please don’t criticize us.”
Sumrall did not take that approach on Monday because he knows there is nowhere to hide after that performance.
And at least for now, we respect that.
