Billy Napier quips on Florida Football fans in basements but not actual solutions

All offseason, Florida Football head coach Billy Napier tried to sell a narrative that things were going to be better for the Gators in 2024. As we saw on Saturday, much of what Napier claimed was going to be fixed wasn't, in fact, fixed.

With the fanbase at a fever pitch, Napier made a comment that only poured more fuel on the burning volcano erupting in Gainesville.

Florida Football: Water Is Wet

Napier was asked an array of questions about how he and his squad are dealing with the disappointment of being smacked by Miami 41-17.

In typical Napier fashion, he talked about cleaning things up and needing to execute better.

He also dropped this doozy of a quote:

"I think we got to become a more consistent team and we have to execute better. If we can focus on those things and not necessarily what some guy in his basement is saying in rural central Florida on social media, then we got a chance to get better, right? I think that's the key. Sometimes you deserve criticism. I think that's one of those things I would say I have no excuses, right? We got to go get it fixed."

Soooo...

Napier believes one of their flaws is not being consistent, which is among the things that people on social media have said for three years under his regime (see beating Utah and Tennessee but losing to Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas), but he doesn't think they know what they are talking about, even though he has no excuses as to why the Gators are inconsistent and it's something that needs to be fixed.

Got it.

Also, there are no basements in Central Florida.

Details.

Forget the basement part of the comment. Napier has once again used his no-excuses trope without providing any actual details about how exactly the ship is going to turn around.

And any blind faith fans had when he arrived has long since been dissolved because very little of what he claims will happen actually happens.

Remember how he sang the praises of Kamryn Waites all off-season? He had 19 pass-blocking snaps that featured four pressures, three hurries, and a hit on the QB.

Remember how he claimed that Damieon George was really a guard and not a tackle? On Saturday, Florida ran the ball six times to the right between the tackle and center for an average of 3.5 yards. Last year, Florida averaged 5.8 yards per carry when going through that same gap.

Remember when he said Chimere Dike "He's proven here just in a couple of days that he can make our team better?" Two targets, one catch.

Remember how George Gumbs was hyped up by the coaching staff into a starting role? 37 snaps, one tackle.

Remember when Napier said that DJ Douglas "I think what I appreciate about DJ is the consistency, we know what we're going to get everyday?" Douglas had more missed tackles than actual tackles on Saturday and went viral for winding up in the bushes.

We can keep going but the point is time and time and time and time and time again all Napier has to offer up is to execute better and be more consistent.

He doesn't accept the fact his offense is so predictable that even a fan in a basement can predict what's next.

He doesn't accept the fact that every opposing QB turns into Superman against the Gators only to look human against everyone else.

He seems to think that players showing up to the building on an off day is some magic potion that no other team in the country is doing.

Above all else, he seems to believe his process is going to work. At SEC Media Days, he stated, "I believe that the thing that I've learned and observed in this league is that you have to have the ability to self-discipline to prepare the same way each week, regardless of the outcome."

So, Florida needs to execute better and be more consistent, but they also don't need to change anything in their preparation that has led them to an 11-15 record?

Got it.

We are going to state what we have stated all month long here at Hail Florida Hail:

Until you have done it, you haven't done it.

So far, Billy Napier hasn't gotten the job done in Gainesville and hasn't offered any new reasons to the public as to why it will get better beyond "Trust me."

Florida Gator fans, wherever they may live, will keep making noise until then.
