During his press conference on Monday, Billy Napier was asked about the health of DJ Lagway and whether Lagway would be able to play if Florida had a game this Saturday.
Napier responded with, "Yeah, we don't play Saturday."
That is a factual statement, but there is no getting around that the injury bug has been running rampant through Florida's training camp and it was confirmed on Monday that another key piece of the roster is going to miss time with a "minor" injury.
LJ McCray is week-to-week with injury
Zach Abolverdi of Gators Online first reported, which was later confirmed by others, that sophomore EDGE LJ McCray is going to be "week-to-week" with a lower body injury that was sustained during a pile-up during practice.
And while it is believed that McCray won't need surgery, he joins the laundry list of Gators who have wound up missing time this training camp due to injuries.
Eugene Wilson, Dallas Wilson, DJ Lagway, Treyaun Webb, Aidan Mizell, and now McCray are among the group of key contributors who have found themselves out of action during camp.
And while the common defense is "Hey, this is football. Injuries are going to happen. Go play pickleball if you don't want to get injured," the reality is that in a make-or-break year, the Gators are breaking before they have even begun.
Hopefully, and fingers crossed, all of these injuries are truly minor and when Florida takes the field against LSU in week three, the Gators are at full strength when they travel to Baton Rouge.
But one thing that has been notable about all of these "minor" injuries that Gators have been racking up is how they have all seemed to linger around longer than the initial prognoses.
Lagway shed his walking boot, but still isn't at a spot to participate in an 11 v 11 scrimmage.
Eugene Wilson and Aidan Mizell were both spotted in non-contact jerseys, then everyone freaked out, then they were spotted in a normal jersey at the next practice.
But based on reports, they didn't actually go through any drills, and they didn't participate in the Saturday scrimmage either.
So when Florida says McCray or Dallas Wilson are week-to-week, it's not unfair to keep a close eye on the depth chart and wonder who is the next man up.
Assuming that guy doesn't get hurt, too.
