Kyle Trask got the call he's been waiting for, and maybe he'll get another opportunity to play in the NFL.
The former Florida Gators quarterback, who holds the school record with 43 passing touchdowns in a season, worked out with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday. Trask, a former second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been waiting for his next opportunity in the league after spending part of last season on the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad and working out with the New Orleans Saints during their minicamp in May.
Trask has now been on the roster or tried out for every team in the NFC South.

Former Gator QB Kyle Trask is hoping to stick with the Carolina Panthers
This could prove to be a good fit for Trask. Panthers coach Dave Canales was Trask's offensive coordinator in Tampa for a couple of years and the quarterback should be familiar with the system.
There's also potential for Trask to make an impression in some real game snaps. The Panthers will play the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame game next Thursday. It's unlikely that starting quarterback Bryce Young will play. Behind him is rookie Haynes King and former first-round pick Kenny Pickett. It's very possible that the Panthers want to have a third quarterback available for that game.
For the Panthers, there's no risk in bringing Trask in for a workout, but for Trask, this could be his last shot in the league. Despite being a high-round draft pick, Trask never caught on with the Bucs and didn't do enough in training camp to earn the trust of Todd Bowles and his coaching staff.
He did receive a one-year contract with the Bucs in March 2025 to continue to operate as Baker Mayfield's backup, but when Mayfield went down with a minor injury during training camp last year, Trask had the opportunity to take first-team snaps and did not impress. Tampa Bay eventually brought in veteran Teddy Bridgewater and released Trask before the season started.

If Trask can get through this workout and earn a camp invite, he should be in line for a couple of snaps next Thursday. That might not sound like much, especially for a player that was drafted so high a few years ago, but as the old saying goes, the NFL means "Not for Long" and, right now, Trask's goal is to give Canales and the Panthers a reason to keep him around for another week.
Trask remains one of the biggest surprises in Florida football history. He was a lightly-regarded recruit out of Manvel, Texas, that had no other FBS offers. He got an opportunity to play in 2019 under Dan Mullen and started 22 games over 2019 and 2020, throwing for 7,224 yards and 68 touchdowns in those two seasons, leading the Gators to the 2020 SEC Championship Game, where he threw for over 400 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-46 loss.
Gator fans have been hoping to see Trask get his shot since he got into the league, but it hasn't been in the cards. Hopefully he can get his career going again in Carolina, but we'll never forget his magical run at Florida.
