The offseason in college football is often dubbed "Talking Season" because we otherwise have no actual games to talk about, so we have to speak in hypotheticals.
Yet since losing to USF last Saturday, this past week for the Florida Gators has felt like "Talking Season," despite the fact that there is an actual game to be played this Saturday, we get to talk about.
Make no mistake about it, a disaster in Baton Rouge could prove to be the end for Billy Napier in Gainesville.
But what if he flips the script and does what he did last year against LSU?
Florida looks for a massive rebound against LSU
Spread | Over/Under | Moneyline |
---|---|---|
LSU -6.5 | 47.5 Points | LSU - 300 |
The spread for this game did come down from the opening of 9.5 points, but the Gators are still a touchdown underdog to a team they beat last season.
The only reason why the spread is as close as it is after Florida lost to a team 17.5 points favored against is that LSU has looked awful on offense themselves two games into the season.
There is a real pathway in this game for LSU to scuttle and allow Florida to hang around. And with Vernell Brown III back at punt return, all it takes is one big return to turn the tide for the Gators.
But even if Florida's defense is able to get a big-time performance from Caleb Banks, who is back off the injury list, it's the offense for the Gators that has to prove it can not only move the ball, but it can also finish off drives.
Because the very real concern for Florida in this game, beyond the dead horses we have beaten up all week, is that the offensive line hasn't looked great. The Gators are near the bottom of the country in tackles for a loss allowed, and that's with playing LIU and USF.
If LSU's defensive line is ready to go, it wouldn't shock us if Florida takes 13 or more tackles for a loss.
This game could be a rock fight, but even if it's not, it is hard to pick Florida to win this one in good conscience.
