One of the concerns Florida fans had, but were willing to accept, when Jon Sumrall took over for Billy Napier, was the roster turnover that was inevitable. In the day and age of the transfer portal, there was zero guarantee anyway had to stay and stick around for Sumrall. There could have been a mass exodus, and Sumrall would be stuck with a roster that would struggle in the MAC.
And while some notable names left, and while it felt like the Gators had to add a ton from the portal, it turns out the roster additions for Florida were middle of the pack within the SEC.
Florida’s transfer additions not as crazy once in context
Once the dust settled, Florida added 32 additions from the transfer portal for the 2026 season. The group is headlined by wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. from Auburn, but also had notable additions along the offensive line, quarterback, and at safety.
32 additions sound like a ton, and it might take Gator fans a game or two to learn who these players are, but according to a graphic from On3 this week, Florida was just 9th in the SEC in total additions from the transfer portal.

Arkansas had 48 new players from the portal, Auburn, the week three opponent for Florida, had 46, and LSU and the Fighting Lane Kiffins had 44. In context, Florida actually did pretty well with roster retention. Of the SEC programs that will have a new head coach for 2026, the Gators had to dip into the transfer portal the least. It’s also notable that Missouri is as high on this list as it is, given that Eli Drinkwitz was floated to be a candidate for Florida’s vacancy. The Tigers have the most incoming transfers among SEC programs that retained their head coach.
But of course, the goal isn’t to add 32 new players every offseason, and the blueprint that Sumrall and crew will want to follow can be found at the bottom of this list. Georgia added only 15 new players, while Texas added just 21. The long-term goal is to build up Florida’s recruiting to the point where the Gators only need to dip into the portal for supplemental options, not as Plan A.
Florida will get its season underway against FAU and will play Campbell in week two, so there will be plenty of opportunities to showcase all the new players on Florida’s roster ahead of the week three showdown against Auburn.
